Barangay Centro

Historical Background The town of Santo Tomas was named after the pioneers Don Tomas Gatan and Don Tomas Bautista. Previously a part of Cabagan, it was created on January 5,1949 by a virtue of Executive Order No. 199 issued by President Elpidio Quirino. It is subdivided into 27 barangays. Barangay Centro was already known barangay located in a lowland community in the Municipality of Santo Tomas and composed of Purok 1, 2 and 3. It is accessible via concrete National Road that connect to a nearby barangay and town. Barangay Centro is bounded by barangays San Rafael Alto, San Rafael Abajo, Ammugauan, San Vicente and Bolinao-Culalabo. In time, the place becomes an established community. Early settlers of the place were simple farm workers as its primary source of income. Locals also raise livestock for extra income. Gradually, stall owners and traders started to conduct business and various commercial stores were established. It has a barangay hall, a day care center, community center, chapel/church, cemetery elementary and a high school. It is also the seat government in the Municipality. It hosts the Municipal Building; Centro is undoubtedly the most progressive barangay in Santo Tomas. It is the biggest barangay in town in terms of developed areas as well as in population. For many years, local residents and migrant workers started settling in the area and the population multiplied in a few years.
